Oare e mult, oare e putin?!

Recently I became one of the 7 billion people that live on planet Earth at the moment! The BBC world news website showed last days how fast that number was growing. You can also find out for yourselves what number you were when you were born and where you sit on the population chart here. I saw that National Geographic made a small movie about what it means to have 7 billion people on earth, you can see it here below.

I wonder, are we many or maybe not so?! The truth is that I have no idea, but it is clear that we hit a round number :). National Geographic tells us that it would take about 200 years to count out loud to 7 billion, and the long term estimations say that, in about 200 years, we would get to be over 100 billion inhabitants… When it comes to space, presently, it seems that we do not take so much space, we would all fit, shoulder to shoulder in a city the size of Los Angeles.

It is interesting for me to see myself as a number (the 4,127,673,750 inhabitant of the planet) or as a very thin, solitary line on a statistical chart. I had the impression that I am or that I represent more than that. The truth is that at a personal level, I as an individual, or any one of us taken separately, mean much more to our families, to friends, to colleagues, to our neighbours, to our business partners, to our children, to ANYONE… Each one of us created our own universe which spins around our own person and where each of us feels that he/she is the CORE of it… So, normally, I guess there should be 7 billion universes that exist at the same time on this planet we call Earth. Maybe this is what we can describe as “parallel universes”…

Then I started thinking at the place where these 7 billion parallel universes live. Did you ever truly see the place you live in?!

The Voyager 1 spaceship, when it exited our solar system (at about 6 billion kilometres away) turned one last time towards Earth to take a final picture (Wikipedia). When I see this picture I feel that my soul fills with fear and horror, it makes me think that we are so small, so frail, so… alone… And it also makes me say quickly in my thoughts: “God, if there is a God, save my soul, if I have a soul…” – I saw this quote somewhere, some place, a long time ago and I forgot who said it first…

That little dot of about 0.12 pixels and bright as a speck of dust in the sun is our own Earth… That little dot contains all our energy, all our hopes and dreams, all our good and wicked thoughts… it contains all the 7 billion parallel universes… This planet, the only one we have, has to put up with us, to feed us, to offer us warmth and shade, water, air, EVERYTHING , for EVERYBODY!! I wonder if someone ever asked Earth if it wants to have us all here?! Did it agree to bear us and sustain us?! If “yes”, did it perhaps expect to get in return what we offer it? How content would you think Earth is to have us?!

Maybe we should take better care with what we have here, if not for us, at least for the billion of people that would follow us shortly, for our children… Because in the end we have no other choice
