– durata albirii cat e? 6 luni… 1 an?

I don’t know how you are, but I am always looking at the eyes and teeth of the person I am talking to. The eyes say something about the mood of the person, and somehow opens a door to a better and easier communication. I will write something about this some time in the future. On the other side, teeth are also important and they say a lot about the personality of each of us. The truth is that I would like to have perfect, white and shining teeth, all of the same size, like small pearls, better than anything seen in TV ads. I know that there are several methods for teeth whitening, some of which you can apply at home, others which require a visit to a specialist. Clearly the price is according to the treatment!

I remember when I was last time in the US, in Los Angeles, in the middle of large malls, there were some improvised dentist offices. Two or three persons with breathtaking smiles invited people to do themselves a world of good and whiten their teeth. They also took a clear look at one’s teeth just enough to make you feel bad :). In the end, with half of a mouth, without even smiling I said “No, thanks” and walked away. The truth is that I am tempted to do such a treatment, but no way in the middle of a mall by some amateurs. Or maybe they were some kind of specialists… I did not ask.

Now I am in the middle of a study about teeth whitening trying to form an opinion on this. Is such a treatment worth having? I do not mean only the financial part, even though such a treatment can go as high as $1000. I am also thinking about the health of my teeth after this temporary teeth whitening procedure. I forgot to say that this treatment has a lifetime which ranges from a few months to a year or maybe even 10 years (although I would hardly believe that). Clearly all specialists will say that this lifetime depends on your diet and lifestyle. This sounds more like… “ok, come and I will whiten your teeth, it costs $1000 and you’ll have it as long as you”ll take care of it”. So it is your fault if it would not last longer… and that means no more coffee, cola, tea, or anything colored for that matter or that might color your teeth. Maybe I should drink only milk afterwards…

But then comes this question: Why should I brush my teeth after each meal, carry the toothbrush with me, the dental floss and a small bottle of mouthwash? Why not go to the dentist every 6 months at least for descaling your teeth? And most of all, most of all… why not start to drink only milk from now on, no tea/coffee/cola? Do I really need a costly, temporary teeth whitening treatment which I am sure will have a negative effect on my teeth on the long run?

Let me tell you how I see this whitening process:

– firstly, you have the impression that your teeth are not as white as others. But teeth are supposed to be translucent, they should allow for some light to go through them. If you drink or eat something that might color your teeth, this will clearly not allow for much light to pass through them, hence the “yellow” teeth.

– when going to a specialist, he or she will apply different types of chemicals on your teeth. This means that these chemicals react with the teeth surface (teeth which are hopefully made mainly of Calcium) and form a kind of layer of a calcium complex (depending on what your dentist will use on your teeth). This complex will be white, opaque and will act as a barrier. Namely it will not allow for light to go through the teeth and it will be reflected by this calcium complex layer. So, what we see is just the outer layer, the tooth underneath remains the same, it has the same color and it is translucent. It is all just an optical illusion!

– now, if the substances on the tooth react with the calcium from the tooth itself, this means that from place to place, on the surface of the tooth, there will be a bond between the tooth and the calcium complex. This means that in fact these substances act on the tooth, taking out a bit of calcium leaving a little hole instead, resulting in the end in a opaque layer of a calcium complex. The result?, you take a microscopic look at the teeth, they will look like Mickey Mouse cheese… namely full of little holes.

– the lifetime of teeth whitening is what? 6 months… 1 year? This means that the complex layer on the surface is gradually removed over time while you still have the same teeth you had before, translucent but yellow. No wait! You are left with holed, translucent and yellow teeth.

– you take another trip to the dentist and start over… and what do you get in the end? With thinner teeth, with bigger and bigger holes in them and equally yellow and translucent as in the beginning.

My conclusion? I should make a habit of taking better care of my teeth, brushing them more often, using dental floss, the special teeth brush (I will come back to this with another post), a good and efficient mouthwash! For the moment I would not recommend a teeth whitening process. Think that teeth whitening is much like a clothes whitening. It is well known that clothes whitening is good for a short period of time, but the clothes fibers are gradually degraded and clothes loose their initial pleasant appearance. Thanks God we can buy new clothes and throw out the old ones….

Like I said before, I am still researching on this subject. What I wrote here is my conclusion so far… I will come back with a post on my final conclusion and my recommendation. I think that in order to have Hollywood-like teeth, one should just replace the teeth with porcelain ones. Do you really believe that the people in the TV ads have such wonderful teeth? Anyway, before you make a final decision, you should ask a few specialists, so that you do not jump ahead in such a process which can in the end come to a vicious circle.
